We've seen some great powerpoint presentations, interesting comic strips, funny caricatures and fantastic crosswords! Remember that when you finish one task, you should start another one straight away - there is heaps that you can do!

Spend 10 minutes or so today writing something on your blog as well. You can write anything you like, but here are some ideas to think about between now and when you leave - or even after you get home! You don't have to answer all the questions. Just write about what you want to write about.

It's nearly time to go home. What are you doing after you leave Queenswood? What is the first thing you will do when you arrive home? Are you sad to leave?

What was the best part of your time here? What was the worst? Why? What happened?

Do you think your experience this year here has helped you learn English? Have you improved your language skills? How? What is better? Do you find it easier to speak now than when you arrived?

How are you going to continue to learn and practise your english after you leave? Do you have English classes? Friends to speak or write to in English? Will you continue writing on your blog in English?

We'll put more questions here as we think of them, but I think that's enough for now!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4447392290707952772.post-81498800748761628482007-07-31T08:37:00.000+01:002007-07-31T10:47:23.945+01:00Tuesday, Week 4Morning! (Or Afternoon, I suppose)

First, have a look at the new sets of instructions we have added to the sidebar to the left here - anyone want to write a newspaper page, a website or an email? Remember to plan it in class BEFORE you come to the computer room.

Also today, EVERYONE should make sure they have done all the BLOG REQUIREMENTS. Show your teacher in the computer room so that you can have your name ticked off on the wall charts.

And finally - remember that if you have done a Powerpoint Presentation, you have to present it to the rest of your class in your classroom. When you have done that, make sure you tell us so we can tick your name off. EVERYONE should have at least their first project ticked off on the wall chart by now. We need to start finishing these things!

Enjoy!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4447392290707952772.post-50525700122011101442007-07-30T10:38:00.000+01:002007-07-31T10:40:18.080+01:00Grisham Class Blogs<a againHi All!
Today's priority is to write some good blogposts about your weekend! What did you do? Where did you go? Did you have fun?
While you are writing, think about these questions too: What has the first week at Lines been like? Have you learnt something? What has been useful? What would you like to be different? And, importantly, what are your goals for this week - your last week here?

We would also like you to have another look at your musical chairs stories today - if you think it is funny or good, add your name and your class's name to the document and print it out to give to your teacher - we want to collect the best ones to make a book!

And finally, we have now put charts on the walls of the classroom now with everyone's names on them. When you can show us that your have completed something, we will tick off that project on the chart, so we can all see how much you've done! Most of you will already be able to tick something off - show us your blog with a visitor counter and a link list, and you can have the first two squares ticked!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4447392290707952772.post-77004368624087663682007-07-26T19:15:00.000+01:002007-07-26T19:58:12.005+01:00FridayCongratulations! You've made it to the end of Week Three!

You can see that we've added a lot to this blog lately - have a look at the links on the sidebar! From now on, if you want to know how to do something, look to see if we've written instructions here before you ask us.

Today we're going to show you how to edit pictures - crop, compress, resize your pictures. If you have a camera, you can use our card reader to transfer the pictures you have taken to the student drive (please save them in your own folder or in the 'shared pictures' folder). Once you've done that, follow the 'How to Edit a Picture' link to compress the photo, which will make it easier to upload, then 'How to Upload a Photo' to upload it to your blog. Alternatively, you can use your photo in any of your projects, of course!

Apart from that, continue working on:

Your Blogs: Click 'Blog Requirements' to see what else you need to do.

Your Projects: Remember that you only have time to type and format in the computer room. You have to plan or write all the text in the classroom before you come to the computer room.

Your Class Dictionary: We've decided to present a prize for the best class dictionary on the final Friday night, so encourage your whole class to work hard on collecting words (look at this blog to find lots and lots of computer terms!) and writing their definitions (and remember you can use your definitions to make a crossword, as well!)

And as always:

Time to get started on some projects! At the end of this course each student will have a blog (set up with comments enabled, a visitor counter and link list, and with photos or video on it, and a completed profile) as well as a copy of their class dictionary. Apart from that, you also have to choose to do a few of the following things:

A Powerpoint Presentation

An A3 Colour Poster (an advertisement for your blog?)

A Website

A Newspaper page

A Crossword

A Comic strip

A Caricature of a teacher, (or AO, or friend, or famous person or whoever you like)

An email or blogpost using as many different chat acronyms and shorthand as possible.

You also need to decide on the content of your project. In class time you will be doing a lot of the planning and correcting of your projects, while in the computer room you will have time to do the technical side of things. Here are some ideas for what to write about:

Excursion-related topics

Countries, nationalities, food, travel, culture etc.

People and Biographies - famous people or Lines people - staff, students, anyone!

Current affairs - news and politics

Queenswood News & Gossip

Daily Life at Lines (Activities, Classes, food, houses, discos, anything!)

Short stores, film or book reviews, horror stories etc.

And of course, if you write or research anything for any of your other classes or workshops, you can use it as the content of your projects here!

We might add more options to this as we think of them. If there is anything else you would like to do that we haven't thought of, let us know.

Have a look at the side bar to the left of this post. There are a list of links to blogposts we have written that tell you how to do things. If you are not sure how to do something, have a look there first, and try to work it out yourself. If you have trouble, ask a friend or your teacher.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4447392290707952772.post-43735027488107066412007-07-24T08:38:00.000+01:002007-07-24T08:50:29.242+01:00Tuesday - Musical Chairs & more blog workHi All,

Today we're going to spend the first part of the lesson having a bit of fun and creating some funny stories. First (that means now) you need to open the MS word program - you'll find the icon on your desktop. Next, click 'File' at the top of the screen, then 'open'. You want to look in the 'linespupil' drive, in a folder called 'musical chairs' and open the file called 'start here'.
Next - and this part is important - save your file in the same 'musical chairs' folder, but with a different name. To do this, click on 'file' again, then 'save as'. Use your name for the file name.
After all that, we're going to play a game where we write stories. It's called 'musical chairs'.

After playing musical chairs, we're going to spend the rest of the lesson working on your blogs. If you finished and printed a blogpost yesterday, then now is the time to edit your old post so that it's correct. You can also write a new post - how about telling us about your time so far here at Queenswood this week - how are your classes? The activities? The meals? Your rooms?. If you were here last week, tell us how this week is different. You can add photos if you have any. If you have any time left, spend it editing your own profile so that we can find out all about you.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4447392290707952772.post-9529132558344601912007-07-22T20:53:00.000+01:002007-07-22T21:30:34.698+01:00Welcome to Lines, Week 3!Hi guys!

Welcome to the new-look E-Comm lessons! We've made a lot of changes for this session, so don't expect anything to be the same!
Things to do today:

Sign up for a google/blogger account (for all students who don't have their own yet)

Start a new blog (for new students only)

Help your new friends start a blog (for old students)

Write a group blog post about blogging (see questions below)

Print any blog post you write to take to your classroom e-comm lesson to be corrected.

One thing that is the same, of course, is your blogs. If you already have a blog, you are going to keep writing to it in these two weeks as well. If you have just arrived, today's task is to start a new blog with your group. To do this, we want each person to sign up for a google account. (If you already have a google account or gmail address, of course you can use that.) To do this, you will need to go to the blogger start page and follow the instructions to sign up. You only need to create one blog per group, so choose one person to continue to step 2 & 3, which is where you create the actual blog. I will then help you to add everyone to your blog so that you can all write to the same one. Make sure you give the address to me, so I can see what you've created!
Once you have a blog to write on, you need to write one post together with your group. Think about the following questions:

What is a blog?

Why do people write blogs?

What is the value of keeping an English learning blog?

How can blogs help you learn English?

If you have time, you can write a second, individual post:

Introduce yourself (new students)

What are your goals for your stay at Lines? What do you want to acheive while you are at Queenswood?

Anything else you want to talk about.

Apart from that, remember to have fun! Your blogs are for you to write your thoughts about learning, the school, the English language, the excursions and whatever else you want to say. We hope you will learn to enjoy the challenge of writing them everyday.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4447392290707952772.post-121445359158847362007-07-20T20:27:00.000+01:002007-07-30T20:34:58.343+01:00How to Create a Newspaper PageUse MS Word to creat a page (or 2) that look like a newspaper or magazine page. Use the definitions that your class has made for the Computer terms dictionary, if you want, or choose a different topic: Lines Queenswood words? Any topic is ok.

Once you have a list of words and definitions:

Go to www.puzzlemaker.com

Click on the drop down menu that says 'choose other puzzles' and select 'criss cross'.

Enter a title for your puzzle, and the size you would like (the standard sizes are fine)

Type each word, followed by a space and then the definition. Type the next clue on the next line.

When you are finished, click 'create my puzzle' and see the results! if you don't like the way it looks the first time, try clicking 'back' on your browser, and 'create my puzzle' again. It will probably be different each time!

Saving:

To save your puzzle, you will need to select it all in the browser, and then copy and paste it to MS Word. Then save it in your folder like a normal Word document! Don't forget you can use 'Ctrl-C' and 'Ctrl-V' to copy and paste!

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4447392290707952772.post-17666087820577035222007-07-20T14:35:00.000+01:002007-07-26T14:52:56.474+01:00Powerpoint PresentationYour presentation can be on a topic of your choice (see the list of suggestions on the Project Overview page). It should include the following things:

At least 6 slides (not including the title!)

Pictures

Text

Transitions between slides

Animated text

You will present your completed slideshow to your class (which means you have to be able to talk about your chosen topic!).
